Whole Foods gets called out

1 01 2009

Quick: What’s the greenest supermarket chain out there? It has to be Whole Foods, right?

The company has skillfully crafted an organic-focused and green-friendly image, yet a report commissioned by investor network Ceres says Whole Foods is considerably less green than it could be. Numerically, Whole Foods received a 27 on the RiskMetrics system, placing at the bottom third of companies studied – and much lower than competitors Tesco (78), Walmart (69) and Safeway.

Companies are being scrutinized ever more closely for the green practices, and the spotlight on businesses that cultivate a green image burns the brightest. Expect plenty more stories like these in 2009.
